Battlefield of 31st May and 1st June, 1862, [map].

Map, 1862, of the Seven Pines battlefield. Drawn by Julius H. Bayol, a private in the 5th Ala. Infantry Regiment, it shows troop positions at the start of the Confederate assault and later, around four o'clock. Specific Confederate regiments noted on the map include the 5th, 6th, and 12th Ala., the 12th Miss., and the 4th Va. Bayol also marked where Thomas H. Carter's Battery was set up. The map presents some details on the formation of the northern troops under the command of Major General Silas Casey. Among other details, Bayol depicted Casey's headquarters, some northern encampments, breastworks, and a temporary commissary. Bayol added a personal dimension to the map by noting where two of his companions, Chapman and Moore, were killed, and where they were buried. He also noted where Alfred Ward, another member of the company, was located when he was wounded.
